Swahili Village Centre, Mambrui

The design is to become a part of a master plan to create a ‘unique sense of place’, celebrating Swahili heritage and culture with contemporary influences and environmental sustainability.The typologies follow Swahili heritage in creating a village centre, with a sense of place and these elements needs to be enclosed (Echoes of the Medina).

With two axis, one set follows the contours offering circulation routes of low incline and connecting anchor elements. The second set to encourage the cooling sea breezes to run through the narrow streets. With the village, there are the following types of accommodation:

  • Courtyard residential with commercial units
  • ┬áCultural area
  • Retail with living spaces over
  • Cafe, restaurant and bars with offices over
  • Hotel
