The site is the principle influence in the design as it is a sloping embankment among mature woodland and became the driving factor in splitting the structure into two forms at upper ground floor level. The change in direction of the contours allows for a natural entrance to be formed into the new dwelling, where the dwelling branches in to a vertical suite of rooms to the west and a horizontal suite of rooms to the east.

The aspect and natural inclination of the site dictates that the principle reception rooms are all south facing on the upper levels while the bedrooms and ancillary accommodation are at the lower ground floor level and have predominately north and northwest facing windows.

The reception rooms have generous south facing windows which lie under a folded metal roof. The lower ground floor bedrooms are held in stone clad base retaining walls with timber cladding above.

The dwelling uses natural materials which are common in the locality in a modern and contemporary way.
